Use the Data Usage Monitoring Tool to view your data usage as calculated by ACCC. The Data Usage Monitoring Tool is the recommended method for monitoring your bandwidth usage on the UIC networks. Please note that although ACCC makes every effort to maintain the availability of its machines, the inability to access the monitor is not a valid reason for exceeding your data usage. Consult UIC Wireless and Res-Net Policy for the current data usage limit and other restrictions.

This guide was written for OS X Mavericks (10.9), but the steps outlined here are similar enough on other versions of OS X. It is recommended to upgrade to 10.9 or 10.10 if your Mac supports it. This can be done via the Mac App Store.

1. Prestage object for the Mac in AD.

2. Login to the Mac as an administrator.

A firewall is a network protection tool that guards against and reports intrusions on your computer from the outside, or unauthorized communications from the inside which runs whenever your computer is on.

ACCC offers UIC faculty, staff, and students Zone Labs Integrity Desktop personal firewall for Windows. Zone Labs Integrity Desktop is Zone Lab's popular and effective Zone Alarm firewall software with additional privacy and protection features.

An Active Directory (AD) account will be locked out if there are too many incorrect password attempts, either by the account owner or by a third-party attempting a brute-force password hack.

Should this happen to you, contact an ACCC consultant at any of the campus labs or the ACCC Service Desk for assistance in having the account unlocked.

Service: Basic Email

Thunderbird 3 and Eudora OSE (Penelope Eudora)

The ACCC supports Mozilla's Firefox browser and asks that everyone use it whenever they can instead of Internet Explorer, so it only seems reasonable that we include instructions on how to set up the Thunderbird email client to use mail.uic.edu. Thunderbird is the email client that goes with Firefox. It's easy to use and quite reasonable. A lot like Firefox, in that way. If you're in search of a new email program, check Thunderbird out. It's nice. (And it does RSS.)

UIC students, faculty, and staff can sign up for free ESRI GIS Software Courses Online. Because of UIC's campus-wide site license with ESRI, one of the principal producers of geographic information systems (GIS) software, as of August 15, 2001 UIC students, faculty, and staff can sign up for a number of software courses at ESRI's Virtual Campus FREE. Virtual Campus courses require that you have access to the internet and specific ESRI software, available in certain UIC labs, to complete course exercises.

Please contact accounts@uic.edu regarding access to Blackboard for guest affiliates who do not have UIC NetIDs. Once a NetID is generated they can then be added to your Blackboard Learn course.

Your ACCC Microsoft Exchange mailbox grows as you create and receive items. To manage the space in your mailbox or on the mail server you are using, you can move old items that are important, but rarely used, to an archive location. This storage process occurs automatically with AutoArchive, but you can customize most of the default settings.

Note: The AutoArchive feature is removed from any Outlook profile that contains a Microsoft Exchange account with retention policies.

1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers.

2. In the console tree, right-click the applicable organizational unit that will contain the new client computer.

3. Click New, and then click Computer.

4. Type the client computer name, click Next.

Outlook has a spam filter which automatically sends spam emails to a junk folder. Sometimes Outlook can mark legitimate and valid emails as spam thus preventing them from reaching your email inbox. The issue is rather frequent despite the fact that Outlook spam filter is set to “low” by default. Solve this issue by turning off the Outlook spam filter.

File attachments may be added to different places in a Course. For example, to an Item, an Assignment, or a File in a Learning Module. There are two options for adding file attachments:

Upgrading to Windows 10 with Endpoint Protection installed

You can upgrade to Windows 10 with Symantec Endpoint Protection 12.1.6 MP1 installed. Symantec Endpoint Protection is available on the webstore. You must uninstall earlier versions of Symantec Endpoint Protection. The operating system upgrade stops if it detects an earlier version of Symantec Endpoint Protection.

The following operating system upgrade paths are supported with 12.1.6 MP1 installed:

Installing is easy, but it can go wrong, and fixing installation problems is not necessarily easy.

A UIC network ID, or NetID, is a public identifier used for authentication to many services provided by the ACCC as well as many University of Illinois computing and networking services.  The NetID is not a password and it is not an account itself but it is required in order to access ACCC and University services.

The Red Hat Network (RHN) Satellite Server provides software updates and a web based interface to check on the update status of your systems. Everyone that has a UIC account can activate an RHN Satellite account.

Advanced features are also available from the RHN Satellite Server such as configuration profiles, custom RPM channels and automated kickstarts.

This page explains how to restore both individual files and restoring an entire disk for files that have been backed up using the ACCC network backup client.

Selecting Files to Restore

We keep multiple copies of each file in the ADSM backups. So the first decision that you have to make, after you decide which files or folders you want to restore is whether you want to restore the most recent backup copy or the backup from some past date.

Service: Computer Labs

To view schedules of reservable labs, go to http://accc.uic.edu/lab/all and select the respective lab from the list.

Using Discussion Board in Blackboard is one of the easiest ways to begin fostering on-line collaboration. This tool will help 'engage' students and foster a community within your individual class. Discussion Board can be a very valuable component to a face-to-face course, especially on a commuter campus like UIC. These Discussion Forums provide a venue for 'asynchronous communication'. They provide a public forum and are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; they make 'anywhere/anytime' learning a possibility.

Any Content Item, including Course Links, External Links, Folders, Learning Units, Off line Content and Tools can be copied from one folder or Course to another folder or Course. Copying content does not delete the content from the original location unless Delete Item After Copy is selected. Content that is deleted after a copy is moved to the new location and does not exist in the original location any longer.

NOTE: Folders may not be copied from other parts of a Course into a Learning Module.

Log in to a Blackboard Learn site, select Tools (or Student Tools) from the Blackboard Learn course menu (on the left) and scroll down to select Blackboard IM.  This will prompt you to download the Blackboard instant messenger software -- a quick and simple installation.  Once Blackboard Instant Messenger is installed, simply login using your Blackboard IM username and password and you can be available anytime and anywhere!
