Viruses exploit weaknesses in your computer's system. As a user of UIC's network, it is your responsibility to secure your machine. Failure to do so will result in a suspension of your Res-Net account or general account privileges. Res-Net users and all other users with a history of infection and/or disregard of computer security may have their Res-Net access or account access permanently revoked.
If you currently have an Internet connection then follow all the steps below to secure your Windows machine and remove all spyware and viruses. This document contains detailed step-by-step procedures you must follow in order to secure your machine. A careful, methodic approach to these procedures will pay off in the long run! If you do not have Symantec AntiVirus software currently installed on your machine then you should install it as soon as possible. To minimize problems, uninstall all previously installed antivirus programs before you install the current version.
You can find out if you have Symantec installed by looking in the lower right hand corner of your screen, a yellow/gold shield icon will be there if then you have Symantec installed. You can also check by clicking on Start and going to Programs. If you see Symantec AntiVirus in the list of programs installed, then you have it installed.

Once you install Symantec AntiVirus, or if you already have Symantec AntiVirus software installed on your machine, update your virus definitions.
Schedule LiveUpdate to run on a regular basis.
