To connect to UIC VPN on a macOS computer, download and install Viscosity. Viscosity is available in the WebStore, free of charge for UIC faculty, staff, students, and affiliates.
If you previously used Tunnelblick to connect, make sure that Tunnelblick is not open. To remove Tunnelblick (recommended), follow the uninstallation instructions.
Download Viscosity from the WebStore. Mount the downloaded disk image by double clicking, and then to install Viscosity, double click Viscosity 1.6.7.pkg. It will open a standard macOS installer, just click next, enter your admin credentials, and let the installer finish.
Viscosity will now be installed and running in your menubar.
Open Viscosity from the Applications folder and click on its icon in the menu bar. Click on Preferences...
Click on the plus icon in the lower left hand corner of the dialog and select Import Connection then From Server...
Enter https://openvpn.uic.edu as the Remote Server Address, and enter your UIC NetID and password as the username and password. Click Import.
A new connection should appear.
You can double-click on its name to change the connection name from openvpn-2.cc.uic.edu to UIC. Click save.
Now switch the the "Advanced' tab. Remove the line "script-security 1" from the extra configuration text box. Click save to apply the changes.
Click on Viscosity icon in the menu bar. Select Connect UIC.
The first time you connect, you will be prompted to authenticate using your UIC NetID and password. You can optionally save your credentials in the Keychain.
The Viscosity icon will turn orange while connecting, then green when it is connected.
A notification will pop-up whenever you connect or disconnect. If you use Growl, you can disable either notification (or both) in System Preferences.
Make sure that Tunnelblick is not open and running when you use Viscosity.
To view the connection logs click on the Viscosity icon and select Details... In the Details window, click on the Display Log tab.
