How do I configure Outlook (Windows) for Basic Email?

The following instructions apply to configuring Microsoft Outlook on Windows for Basic Email accounts (Tigger and Mailserv):

  1. In Outlook, click File then Info followed by Accounts Settings.

  2. Highlight the account you're modifying and click Change or click Add if you're adding a new account.
    • For Incoming mail server: type: mail.uic.edu
    • For Login Information, enter your UIC NetID (without @uic.edu) and ACCC common password .
    • Check Remember password if you feel it's safe.
    • Do not check Use Secure Password Authentication (SPA)

  3. Click More Settings and go to the Outgoing Server tab
    • Check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication
    • Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server

  4. On the Advanced tab
    • Select SSL from Use the following type of encryption connection: for your Incoming server.
    • The Incoming server: will change to port number 993 if you're using IMAP or 995 if you're using POP.
    • If you are using IMAP, here is where to enter your "Root folder path": mail/
    • Outgoing Server (SMTP): port number 587
    • Select TLS from Use the following type of encryption connection:

  5. Click OK.
  6. Click Next>Finish, and Close.
  7. If it doesn't work when you're finished, try adding the port to your firewall.
  8. If Outlook can't find your Inbox, you can tell it where it is:
  9. Tools -> Options -> Other tab
    1. Click the Advanced Options button.
    2. Click Browse beside Startup in the folder: and select the correct Inbox.
    3. Click OK three times.
