Mac OS X

System Requirements

Note:  Other configurations may work, but have not been tested.

  • Processor: Intel Single Core 1.8 GHz processor (Intel Dual Core 1.8 GHz processor for audio, display and/or video capture)
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Network Interface: 10/100
  • Mac OS X 10.7 and above (including support for 10.9 Mavericks)
  • QuickTime 7.5.5 or later (installed with OS X)
  • Internal audio device or USB port for audio capture; USB video device

Note:

  • Personal Capture for Mac is supported on Mavericks (MAC OS X 10.9), however upgrading to Mavericks (OS 10.9) may cause corruption in an existing PCAP installation. Captures will work fine but publishing the capture will get stuck in the "Transcode Pending" state. If this happens, save any un-published captures, uninstall and reinstall Personal Capture.
  • On the Macbook Air 11" Retina Display model, the native resolution is 1366x768. Personal capture does not support this resolution/ratio.
    • Workaround: Open System Preferences and change the screen resolution to something smaller (i.e., 1280x720).
  • There is a known issue where Personal Capture for Mac cannot capture Display input properly at the native resolution for a 15" Macbook Pro with Retina display (which is 2880 x 1880 pixels). Personal Capture does not have issues capturing Display input from the 13" Macbook Pro with Retina Display (native resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels).
    • Workaround: Use an application that allows you to select a different screen resolution for the 15" Macbook Pro w/Retina Display. Echo360 has been successful testing with QuickRes, available at http://www.quickresapp.com. QuickRes is priced at $2.99 at the time of this update.

Install and run QuickRes first, set the screen resolution below 2880 x 1880, then launch Personal Capture. If Display capture still shows issues or distortion, try a different resolution.

Antivirus software

Antivirus software should not affect the operation of the application, although it may require the user to confirm that they want to allow Echo360 Personal Capture to run on the machine.

Network requirements

Note: A network connection is required for first-time application installation, due to third-party software installation requirements.

For publication of captures, all machines require a network connection. A broadband-speed connection is recommended as a minimum to optimize file upload speed and efficiency.

If any firewalls are running on the network, the following ports must be open:

Port Description Port Port Direction Protocol
DNS 53 outbound UDP
HTTP 80 outbound TCP
HTTPS 8443 outbound TCP
SFTP 8022 outbound TCP

Installation

  1. Log in to the ESS.
  2. Navigate to the Downloads tab.
  3. Download the installer by selecting Installer for EchoSystem Personal Capture (Mac OS X). The installer must be run locally, so save the file on your computer.
  4. Depending on the browser you are using and the browser settings you have configured, clicking the software download link in the ESS results in either a .zip file or a .app file being saved to your Downloads folder. If it is a zip file, clicking the zip file should extract the .app file contained within it.
  5. Find and click on the downloaded or extracted .app file for the Personal Capture installer. In most cases it will be located in your Downloads folder.
  6. Depending on your security settings, you may receive a dialog box indicating that the installer cannot be opened. If you are running OS X 10.8 or later, the default security "curtain" is to only allow launch of applications downloaded from the Mac App store. As a result you will need to locate and right-click or command+click the .app file and select Open from the pop-up menu. This should provide you with a similar warning box, but the option to Open the installer file. This method is recommended.
  7. Once the installer is launched, follow the prompts to complete installation.
  8. After Personal Capture is installed, launch it. Ensure it works as expected. If it does, you may delete the downloaded zip file and the extraction folder, including the installer file. These are no longer needed.

Note: Personal capture will automatically check for updates on launch. If there is an update to the version you have installed, you will be asked if you want to update now or later. No need to uninstall to reinstall a new version.

Uninstalling

To remove Echo360 Personal Capture, delete it from the Applications folder.

Note: Make sure that all your captures have been uploaded to the ESS before uninstalling.

Antivirus software

Antivirus software should not affect the operation of the application, although it may require the user to confirm that they want to allow Echo360 Personal Capture to run on the machine.

SFTP 8022 outbound TCP

Installation

The Windows installer will download Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 from the Microsoft websites if not detected on the client machine. If any firewalls are running on the network, they must allow downloads over port 80 (HTTP) from external websites.

The following steps outline how to install Personal Capture on Windows.

  1. Log in to the ESS (echo360.uic.edu).
  2. Navigate to the Downloads tab
  3. Download the installer by selecting Installer for EchoSystem Software Capture.
  4. Right-click on the EXE installer file and select 'Run as Administrator' (Note: the Administrator password for the local machine is required)
  5. A User Account Control window may appear confirming that you want to run the program installer. Click Allow.
  6. The installer will now detect if Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 is installed on the machine. This application is required for Echo360 Personal Capture to function. If it was detected as installed, you will proceed directly to Echo Desktop Capture installation. If it is not detected, you will be prompted to install it.
  7. Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 will now be downloaded from the Microsoft website and installed.
  8. Once third party software installation is complete, the Application README text will be displayed. Read through, and click Accept to continue.
  9. You will be prompted to accept a license agreement.  Click on "I accept the agreement" and Next to continue.
  10. Follow the installation wizard. When the Select Application Mode page appears, as shown below, select Personal Capture mode then click Next.
  11. Confirm or change the locations for installation and for capture files, then click Next
  12. Choose weather to run the application when finished and/or install a shortcut on your desktop and click Finish.

Note: In-place upgrade to Software Capture 5.4 is not supported from 5.3 or earlier because of the new design; you will not be automatically notified of an available upgrade. If you are upgrading to 5.4 from a previous version:

  • Be sure your computer is running one of the above-listed supported operating systems.
  • You can install the new version (instructions below) with the old version present; you do not have to uninstall the old version. However, be advised of the following:
    • Existing captures will appear in the new version.
    • You will NOT be able to use the new Personal Software Capture to edit previous captures that have two visual inputs (A/D/V or A/V/V).
    • Instead, you can publish your previous version A/D/V or A/V/V personal captures and edit them through the ESS.

For future upgrades (from 5.4 to future versions) a notice will appear in the bottom bar of the program informing you that an update is available. Clicking on the bar launches the update.
