Student Email Routing FAQs

Why are we requiring students to use UIC Gmail?

The new email policy that requires students to use Gmail was put in place to safeguard against spam attacks and blacklisting, or blocking, of UIC emails.

Last spring, UIC was the target of a spam attack that resulted in Google blocking “@uic.edu” emails, which created many issues including email message delays, undeliverable email, and the inability to receive emails. This issue lasted for four weeks and UIC had no recourse to solve the problem – Google told us that all we could do was wait until the blacklist was removed. The root cause of this problem was identified to be the automatic forwarding of UIC destined email to personal Gmail accounts.

While we understand that the new email policy change may be an inconvenience for some, we are requiring all students to use UIC Gmail for campus email because it will help eliminate future blacklisting. Routing your email to UIC Gmail will also provide a better, more reliable service, and will help us guarantee that email is delivered.

I don’t like having two email accounts. What can I do?

You can use an email client, such as Mozilla Thunderbird, Apple Mail, or Outlook. An email client is a computer program that is used to access and manage a user's email. This is convenient because it can allow a user to have all of their mail in one place. For UIC's Google Apps service, the configuration settings that allow any email client to connect can be found here: accc.uic.edu/service/googleapps/configuration

.

For help installing an email client, please visit the ACCCeSS Helpdesk or C-stop.

I’m not sure if my Google Apps account was correctly created. What should I do?

When you have successfully created your Google Apps account, you will see the following screen.

Sometimes there is a momentary delay during the account creation process. Try waiting five minutes. If you still have trouble accessing your Google Apps account, call 312-413-0003, email consult@uic.edu, or stop by the ACCCeSS Helpdesk or C-stop.

How do I login to my UIC Gmail account?

Once you have successfully changed your email routing to UIC Gmail, future emails addressed to you at @uic.edu will be available at gmail.uic.edu.

How do I check my UIC Gmail account on my smartphone?

You can sync your Google services, including your UIC Gmail account, to your phone, tablet, and desktop programs so that you can always access what's important to you. For instructions on how to sync Google services, please see: google.com/sync/index.html
