Starting on Saturday, August 17, 2013, users of Mac OS 10.8.4 and later that join Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing sessions will download a .collab file instead of the usual .jnlp file to launch their Blackboard Collaborate sessions. Everyone else will continue to join sessions as they previously have.
Several recent Java updates by Oracle have caused issues for Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing users, especially those running on Mac OS systems. Apple's protection for Java on the Mac is also becoming increasingly disruptive for Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing users with new default settings that prevent the application from launching seamlessly. This new method to launch sessions will help these users when connecting to Blackboard Collaborate.
Because the .collab file provides the Java needed to participate in Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing sessions, users of Mac OS 10.8.4 and later no longer need to install and maintain the system version of Java.
