Encryption provides an easy-to-use and secure means to protect Sensitive and High Risk data on computers. Laptops and desktop computers can be lost, stolen or have hard drives removed. Many other scenarios can also jeopardize the privacy and security of your important data.

Users with FERPA, HIPAA, intellectual property, research data, and other sensitive information can use encryption to protect their data. In many cases, encryption is required to comply with the UIC IT Security Program, legal, regulatory, or grant requirements.

Solutions Available

There are 2 offerings within the Encryption service

  • PGP:  PGP software provides easy-to-use and secure encryption to protect sensitive data on laptops or PCs for Faculty and Staff.
  • MBAM for Departments:  Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring provides reporting and monitoring capabilities for departments to ensure compliance of departmental assets.

  • Students may check out laptops and other multimedia equipment for three days at a time, at no cost, from several locations on campus.
    • Laptops are limited to three total checkouts per semester, in order to ensure the limited supply of laptops is available to as many students as possible.
  • Faculty may reserve or check out laptops and other multimedia equipment for use in a specific class session, at no cost, from the ACCC-LTS Support office.
  • Faculty may check out multimedia equipment for three days at a time, at no cost, from the ACCC-LTS Multimedia Lab.
  • Students, faculty, or staff can rent multimedia equipment for scheduled events, for a fee.  Details of this service are found at the Event Support (Audio/Visual) service page.

ACCC provides equipment rental and technician support for multimedia needs at events. Equipment and service reservations are available for academic courses and special events.  Equipment can be rented and picked up from a designated location, or technician support can be included and equipment will be delivered, setup, monitored through the event, and taken down at the end of the event.  Any request that is not directly related to a CRN-based course is subject to rental and labor fees.

This premium service ensures a flawless integration with Outlook enhancing your management of calendar, email, contact, task, and note integration. Exchange has superior speed with large mailboxes, and much more up-to-date and functional web interface. Mobile computing is made easy with native support for Windows Mobile smart phones. Mobile devices are supported by using Exchange Active Sync, available on all major mobile manufacturers (Apple, Android, Windows, BlackBerry).

We currently provide both a local version of Exchange and the cloud based version of Exchange, called Exchange Online.  Below is a chart comparing the two versions. All newly hired employees are automatically provisioned with Exchange Online accounts and we are working towards migrating all local Exchange users to Exchange Online.
