Overview 

Streaming is the process of delivering large media files online without waiting for the entire file to download before viewing. While applications or packages typically require that they be downloaded in their entirety before using them, streaming allows you to see the first minute of video while the next minute downloads, hence streaming the media file.

Features 

ACCC offers three options for streaming video as shown in the table below. The last two options will be removed from production at the end of the year.

YouTube
This tool is recommended for faculty and instructors that want to “flip” the classroom, or that are creating content for blended or online courses; and for students that need to create video assignments to share with classmates and instructors. 
 
YouTube is an app from the Google Apps for Education suite that provides you with additional storage across Gmail and Drive, no advertisement, 24/7 phone and email support, 99.9 guaranteed uptime, and enhanced security features. You can share your videos with students via a direct link or embedding the videos in your Blackboard course site. To use this service, you’ll need to login into your Google Apps account using your UIC NetId and password and create a new channel.

Media@UIC (Ensemble Video)

This tool is recommended for departments that want to stream videos to their constituents.

Media@UIC is a Media Management System designed to make storing, sharing and presenting your media quicker, easier and better. Media@UIC allows you to share your videos, photos and audio and you have the ability to embed video and media content directly into your Web page using CSS and embed code for immediate use during presentations.

ShareStream ShareStream is a system for uploading, managing and delivering video and audio content in a secure and auditable environment. Currently the ShareStream Online Video Platform is streaming existing content but new media content can only be added by current users of this server. If you are a user of ShareStream and would like to migrate your content to YouTube, you can contact us for support.
Flash Streaming Server This server will be discontinued as of December 2016. Content in this server has been automatically migrated to ShareStream. If you are a user of this service and would like to migrate your content to YouTube, you can contact us for support.
Helix Streaming Server This server will be discontinued in December 2016. Content in this server has been automatically migrated to ShareStream. If you are a user of this service and would like to migrate your content to YouTube, you can contact us for support.

 

Cost 

YouTube and ShareStream are free services available to faculty, staff, and students that use streaming media for teaching and learning purposes.

Media@UIC service is available for departmental use only. There is a charge related to this service based on the amount of disk space your videos require. Costs are calculated by 10GB increments.

  • First 10 GB - $10 per month
  • Each additional 10 GB - $5 per month
