Backup services allow campus staff and faculty to protect the files stored on computers and mobile devices.  These services are designed to allow for the restoration of data in case the file is lost or the computer is damaged in some way.

Audience: Faculty, Staff

We copied the IBM manuals to the ACCC Web space because IBM has a long history of moving their documentation around on their website (and even from one Web site to another) and therefore breaking our links to them. These books are in Adobe Acrobat (pdf) format.

The ACCC runs the Network Backup Service on all the files stored on an ACCC UNIX workstation every night, time permitting.

This page has instructions on how to install and configure the TSM client, and to run a manual backup. Before you begin, you need to do some initial steps like registering your node and making sure your password is up to date.

You can set up rules in the backup client preferences menus to include or exclude certain types of files or certain locations on your computer.

After you create the scheduler, you should check to make sure it will automatically start when you reboot your computer. Because the scheduler runs as a service, you have to start the Services Administrative Tool to do this.

Restoring Files

This page explains how to restore files with Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) for Windows. ADSM TSM Network Backup for Windows: Installation explains how to install the TSM backup client and set up the backup client to make regular backups.

If you're having trouble with being able to access your restored files or folders on your new PC, even on an administrator account, you may need to take ownership of the file.

Backup your campus server over the network, unattended. Retrieve files inadvertently erased or recover from hard disk failure. Do this before you lose files.

This page explains how to restore both individual files and restoring an entire disk for files that have been backed up using the ACCC network backup client.

Selecting Files to Restore

We keep multiple copies of each file in the ADSM backups. So the first decision that you have to make, after you decide which files or folders you want to restore is whether you want to restore the most recent backup copy or the backup from some past date.

We have seen several cases where people have restored files from one Windows PC to another Windows PC (both of which use NTFS file systems) and then they can not access the restored files or folders on the new PC, even if they are logged in on an administrator account. The problem is small but important difference between the administrator accounts on the two PCs.

If you get error messages like:

11/07/2012 13:55:12 ANS1835E PASSWORDACCESS is GENERATE, but password needed for server 'ADSM'.

Either the password is not stored locally, or it was changed at the server.

You didn't properly initiate Password Generate.

The TSM manual says: "When the [TSM] client scheduler ... runs as a Windows service, the options in the registry are used instead [of the options in the dsm.opt file]. If you are using the scheduler service and change an option in the dsm.opt file, you must update the corresponding value in the registry as well."

Yes. Even if you get a new computer, you can continue to use your ADSM server name and your old node name with the network backup service on the new computer. Since you're using the same account, node name, you will have access to all your old files.

Service: Backups

If you're using a new computer, the problem is that the Network Backup Service is trying to connect to your original computer and isn't finding it. You can not select "Restore to Original location". Instead, you must select "Restore to Following location" and specify where to restore the files to since the original location does not exist on your new computer.

The system administrator must set Passwordaccess to generate and must use TSM to generate a password file when he or she installs and configures the TSM Network Backup Client.

Also, you are using Apple MacOS X 10.3 and higher's Case Sensitive HFS+ file system with the IBM TSM (ADSM) Mac client...

While in TSM on your computer, from the Utilities menu, select Set Authorization (Windows) or Node Access List (Macs), then select Add. Fill in the Add authorization information. Click OK.

You can authorize others for the whole drive, selected directories, or just selected files.

As long as a file exists on your personal computer or workstation, the backup service will keep a backup of that file. This "most recent" backup is called the ACTIVE copy. If you never erase it from your personal computer or workstation, the backup service never erases the backup copy.

Move the following folders to the trash; you may not have all of the items, depending on which version of the TSM client you are uninstalling:
  1. /Applications/Tivoli Storage Manager
  2. /Library/Application Support/tivoli
  3. /Library/StartupItem/dsmcad
  4. If you wish, /Library/Logs/tivoli
  5. If you wish, ~/Library/Logs/tivoli
  6. If you wish, /Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager
  7. If you wish, ~/Library/Preferences/Tivoli Storage Manager

An error message will appear if the archive command is used in TSM for Backups. The error is "The management class does not contain any archive copy groups. Unable to continue with archive."

The archive function of TSM is not available at UIC. We run TSM only as a backup/recovery system. The ACCC has no current plans to enable the archival function.
