Symantec's/PGP Corp's documentation on PGP Desktop is quite good. If you have any questions, take a look at these. In particular, if you want to know how PGP Desktop and PGP Whole Disk Encryption (WDE) works, take a look at the User's Guides below.

Encryption provides an easy-to-use and secure means to protect Sensitive and High Risk data on computers. Laptops and desktop computers can be lost, stolen or have hard drives removed. Many other scenarios can also jeopardize the privacy and security of your important data.

Users with FERPA, HIPAA, intellectual property, research data, and other sensitive information can use encryption to protect their data. In many cases, encryption is required to comply with the UIC IT Security Program, legal, regulatory, or grant requirements.

Solutions Available

There are 2 offerings within the Encryption service

  • PGP:  PGP software provides easy-to-use and secure encryption to protect sensitive data on laptops or PCs for Faculty and Staff.
  • MBAM for Departments:  Microsoft BitLocker Administration and Monitoring provides reporting and monitoring capabilities for departments to ensure compliance of departmental assets.
Audience: Faculty, Staff, IT
Service: Encryption

PGP Desktop Encryption has integrated email functions, but the UIC license doesn't include them. However, the PGP Viewer is part of the UIC PGP Desktop Encryption installation. PGP Viewer decrypts, verifies, and displays encrypted or signed files. So if you save an encrypted or signed email message to a file, you can decrypt or verify the saved file with PGP Viewer.

Before you can use PGP in your correspondence with someone else, you'll have to exchange public keys with them. Here's how.

PGP, Pretty Good Privacy, is a "public key cryptosystem." (Also known as PKC.) In PGP, each person has two "keys": a "public key" that you give to other people, and a "private key" that only you know.

Installing is easy, but it can go wrong, and fixing installation problems is not necessarily easy.

Your data deserves protection. The UIC license for PGP Desktop Encryption provides easy to use and secure encryption to protect sensitive data on your laptop or desktop computers. Laptops are easily lost, and even desktop computers can be stolen.

By default, all keys you import to your keyring are 'untrusted' until you tell PGP otherwise. If you're sure the key is valid and you don't mind getting an error message every time you use it, you can just ignore the invalid key error message.

But you'll probably want to assign some level of trust to the keys you'll use most often. The best way to do this is to sign the key with a non-exportable signature:

PGP Whole Disk Encryption provides easy to use and secure encryption to protect sensitive data on laptops or PCs. Laptops are easily lost, and even desktop computers can be stolen. PGP Whole Disk Encryption also includes a secure shredder, to really delete files you want to delete.
