Microsoft Windows 7 and Server 2008 Support Ends 1/14/2020

As most of you are aware, Microsoft has announced that Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2, will no longer be supported after January 14, 2020. After this date, university-owned Windows 7 machines and Server 2008 machines will no longer receive security patches from Microsoft, and will no longer be allowed to connect to the UIC network.

To assist IT units on campus, ACCC is working to compile a list of active machines running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008. NOTE that this list is meant as an aid to IT units, which are ultimately responsible for ensuring that all out-of-support devices are identified and either upgraded or removed from the network.

Please see below for options and important dates:

1) Replace the university computer with a newer device running a newer version of Windows prior to Jan 14, 2020.

2) Upgrade your machine’s operating system:

For ACCC-managed computers, email for assistance. If the computer is managed by a unit other than ACCC, submit a ticket directly to the appropriate IT department. For non-managed university computers, download a newer operating system and install Windows 10 from the university webstore:

3) Request a temporary security exception:

In some rare instances (e.g. due to software compatibility issues), it may not be possible to upgrade the operating system prior to Jan 14, 2020. Systems that cannot be upgraded are only allowed on the network with an exception request approved by the ACCC Information Security and Privacy Office. Submit an exception request to the ACCC security group at by December 13th, 2019. Exception requests will be reviewed, and an appropriate action plan will be created, if possible.

Important Dates

  • December 13, 2019 – Deadline to submit your security exception request.
  • January 14, 2020 – Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2 no longer supported by Microsoft.
  • February 1, 2020 – Email notices to Windows 7/Server 2008 systems connected to the campus network will be sent to outstanding machines.
  • March 1, 2020 – ACCC will filter all Windows 7/Server 2008 devices seen on the campus network.
