Teaching Online – Summer/Fall 2020

Summer is going online at UIC, and many courses in the fall will be online too. The Academic Computing and Communications Center (ACCC) has designed an online tutorial to guide you through the use of best practices, resources, tools, and technologies to build your online course.

There are many factors involved in successful and effective online learning. These include the course design, activities, content, the instructor’s “presence,” the interactions between the students and the instructor, student autonomy, and even time management.

Basic Technology Requirements

  • Device

    Instructor: Laptop or desktop computer. If your device doesn’t come with a camera, use an external USB camera (webcam) for video conferencing.

    Student: Basic Requirements

  • Microphone

    Instructor: While this may be built into your computer, we recommend using an external device such as a USB microphone or headset.

    Student: Basic Requirements

  • Internet

    Instructor: Either commercially provided (e.g., Comcast, AT&T), or a wireless hotspot through your mobile phone.
