eLearning Authoring

An eLearning content authoring tool can create and package digital content for learners online. Here is a selection of software available to UIC instructors and staff to help create engaging eLearning content.

Adobe Captivate

Adobe Captivate is a responsive authoring tool used for creating eLearning content such as software demonstrations, software simulations, branched scenarios, and randomized quizzes in Small Web Formats (.swf) and HTML5 formats. Adobe Captivate can be downloaded from the UIC WebStore at a reduced price, or purchased by your department when installed on a UIC-owned computer. PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint is more than just a presentation tool. Slides can include text, graphics, audio, video, and other objects that can be placed freely across the slide. Combine these with animations, transitions, and triggers to create an interactive lesson. Content can be exported as a video or shared online using Office 365. Camtasia Studio

Camtasia Studio facilitates the capture, editing, and production of multimedia on a desktop computer. You can capture video of anything on the computer screen (microphone and webcam input as well), and then edit and produce high-quality clips in many different file formats. These are some of the features available:

  • Capture PowerPoint or Keynote presentations quickly & easily
  • Record and highlight interaction with websites or applications
  • Emphasize and elaborate with callouts, animations, and other enhancements
  • Make content accessible with closed captioning
  • Collect quiz results via email or SCORM-compliant LMS

VoiceThread

VoiceThread is a learning tool for enhancing student engagement and online presence.

You can access VoiceThread through Blackboard to create a shared presentation that participants can asynchronously comment on either by text, voice, or video. The presentation can include any form of digital media, including images, audio, video, and text. The resulting output of this combination of the digital presentation and accumulated viewer comments is called a “VoiceThread". The integration with Blackboard allows the creation and grading of student assignments. Learn more about how to integrate VoiceThread in your Blackboard courses.

Adobe Presenter

Adobe Presenter is a screencasting tool that uses PowerPoint slides, audio narration, and your webcam to create videos. These are some of the features available:

  • Support for simultaneous recording of screen and webcam video feeds
  • Simple editing interface to mix the two video streams
  • Insert quizzes along with video content
  • Publish to YouTube, Vimeo, or your desktop
  • Publish to Blackboard using SCORM to enable quiz reporting

Adobe Presenter is a PowerPoint plug-in available on Windows. Adobe Presenter Video Express 11 is also available as a stand-alone product on Macintosh. Both versions are available on the UIC WebStore for a fee.
