An error message will appear if the archive command is used in TSM for Backups. The error is "The management class does not contain any archive copy groups. Unable to continue with archive."

The archive function of TSM is not available at UIC. We run TSM only as a backup/recovery system. The ACCC has no current plans to enable the archival function.

As long as a file exists on your personal computer or workstation, the backup service will keep a backup of that file. This "most recent" backup is called the ACTIVE copy. If you never erase it from your personal computer or workstation, the backup service never erases the backup copy.

We keep multiple copies of each file in the backups. So the first decision that you have to make, after you decide which files or folders you want to restore is whether you want to restore the most recent backup copy or the backup from some past date.

For the time being, a backup solution is not being provided as part of the base configuration.  ACCC hopes to include it in the future depending on licensing and costs.  In the meantime, clients are encouraged to setup some means of backup/protection.  One option is to utilize the ADSM backup solution that ACCC offers (, another and possibly complementary solution is to create and utilize a account through the University (, and

If you are using Apple Mac OS X 10.3 and higher's Case Sensitive HFS+ file system with the TSM Mac client:

  • The client needs a writable error log. If a log isn't present, it will be opened under the name and permissions of the user who invokes the applications. It may mean that the user won't have permission and it won't run.
  • It is strongly recommended that you create any required logs (a) in a directory and (b) with proper permissions to allow all users on your Mac write access.
