Wired Network

Category: Networking
Audience: Faculty, Staff, Students, IT

Overview

All buildings on the UIC campus are connected to the UIC campus backbone network, which connects UIC to the Internet through three Internet service providers.

Requirements

To connect to UIC-Net you will need an active wall data jack and a configured computer or device with an ethernet card.

To request a new connection for an existing wall jack (bjack), contact the  REACH representative for your department. REACH representatives are listed on the Departments A-Z page. If your department do not have a REACH representative, or they are not available, contact the Client Services Office.

If you would like a UIC-Net network connection to be added to a room in which there is not yet a wall jack, contact the Telecommunications Consulting.

Applicability

Basic Connection Information

If you are using DHCP:

The DHCP server should set up your IP address, a Subnet Mask, and Router up for you. (See Registered IP Address above.)

  • Add the DNS Servers as below.
    • 128.248.2.50
    • 128.248.7.50
    • 128.248.171.50
  • Search domains: uic.edu This is the default ending your machine will put on if you type, for example: ssh tigger

If you have a Registered IP Address:

You will need the following:

  • Your machine's IP Address (and make sure it is registered; check with your department's REACH representative)
    • East side IP addresses begin with: 131.193.
    • West side IP addresses begin with: 128.248.
  • Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
  • Router address: Type the first three parts of your machine's IP address and then 1 as the fourth part. Thus, if your IP address was 128.248.5.122, then your Router would be 128.248.5.1
  • DNS Name Server addresses:
    • 128.248.2.50
    • 128.248.7.50
    • 128.248.171.50
  • Search domains: uic.edu This is the default ending your machine will put on if you type, for example: ssh tigger

Cost

There is no cost to use UIC-Net in campus offices and labs beyond the cost of installing a data jack if one is needed. In the residence halls, the Res-Net charges apply.
